Collbató’s Council agreed the 3rd of May of 2007 the initial approval to extend the industrial park of Les Ginesteres from 17 acres to 70 acres. This project represents the destruction of the best agricultural fields in Collbató and a menace to the privileged surroundings of Montserrat, especially for the Natural Park of Montserrat and the Nature Web 2000 that border on the new industrial park. The Council is going ahead with this project despite the negative reports from the Urbanism and Environmental Technical Services from the same Council, which considered it massive and unjustifiable. The Environment Department, with representation from neighbourhood associations and citizens, strongly objects this project. In a borough of little more than 3,500 citizens, more than 1,200 allegations have been collected by them; they have realized that the Council lied when it was said to be “a small extension”. In reality, it is an industrial complex with more than 23 acres, more than 140 buildings of more than 40 feet high and parking space for more than 1,000 vehicles. The new park allows highly polluting activities: metallic work with thermal energy hammers of up to 350 KW, electrolytic treatments, alloy of metals with phosphorus and iron and steel industry waste, concrete preparation, chemical industry, abrasive material, management of dangerous waste material like asbestos, cyanide, chrome, dissolvent, pesticides, phosphorus, used oil and explosive material manipulation, amongst others. In summary, another corruption manoeuvre that does not answer to the local economic needs and is on the side of those businessmen “sympathizers of the Council’s party”, who have already signed an agreement that will instantly give them a benefit of more than 120,000,000 euros.
